After your orthodontic treatment is complete, you can proceed to a retainer to maintain your results. A retainer can protect the time and money you invested in your orthodontic treatment by holding your teeth in their new place while your jaw and gums stabilize. To address the demands of West Bridgewater, MA patients, our multi-specialty practice offers several post-orthodontic appliance options, including removable and fixed retainers. Our skilled dentists are highly qualified to help you in the process and assist you in reviewing all of your options.
Types of Retainers
West Bridgewater Dental offers our patients three kinds of retainers based on each individual patient's requirements: a Hawley, clear, or fixed retainer. The Hawley retainer (the most frequently used retainer) is composed of shaped wires, plastic, and clasps, and may be removable. A see-through retainer is inconspicuously worn the same way as a clear teeth aligner and can be taken out of the mouth quite easily. A fixed retainer can't be removed from your mouth as it's secured behind your teeth in the upper or lower arches.

A retainer is suggested for all patients who complete orthodontic therapy. Although your teeth are set in their proper position, a retainer can help to keep them in place while the remainder of your mouth adapts. A retainer is excellent for younger patients who are still waiting for all of their permanent teeth to come in and while their jawbone is still forming.
What to Expect
When your braces are removed from your teeth, you may start your retainer process. We'll take an impression of your teeth and ship it to a dental lab. As soon as your retainer is returned, roughly 1 – 2 weeks later, we'll schedule an office visit. At this appointment, our skilled clinical team will ensure your retainer fits comfortably. We'll also review when to use your retainer and how to keep it clean.
The amount of time you need to wear your retainer may vary. It's usually suggested to use your retainer until all of your permanent teeth come in and when your jaw is done developing (usually at around 20 – 25 years old). With good maintenance and routine exams, your retainer may be kept for many years. Your retainer might have to be repaired or replaced over time as normal wear and tear occurs. It's important to practice daily cleaning and keep your retainer secure if not being used. If your retainer becomes lost or damaged, contact our office to receive a new appliance.
Your retainer may be included in your orthodontic therapy. During your initial consultation, our knowledgeable team will inform you if there's an additional expense for your appliance. We can discuss your retainer options and provide cost estimates. If you're using dental insurance, we'll contact your provider to determine whether any of your costs are covered and then calculate your out-of-pocket expenses. West Bridgewater Dental accepts several convenient payment methods, such as low-interest financing.
